I'm a mom, just like you. I've blinked and my 3 boys have jumped from babies to kids and I wholeheartedly agree believe that creating & capturing special memories together matters more than anything.

hi, i'm paige!

Newborn photo shoots are so exciting! Not because of what goes on during the photo shoot itself, but because of what your photographer will provide. Lifetime memories of your precious baby while they are tiny and helpless! While it is easy to get caught up in the excitement of the moment, it is important to keep in mind a few “do’s and don’ts” when it comes to preparing for this critical photo session. While there are many more than the ones we mention here, these are some of the most important in our opinion!

Do – Your Homework!

Be sure to checkout your photographer thoroughly prior to booking your appointment and paying your deposit or sitting/studio fee. This may seem obvious, but there are plenty of new photographers out there that are not qualified to be newborn photographers. Check out our recent article that includes 10 questions to ask your newborn photographer!

Don’t – Assume your Newborn Photographer has Experience

Just because you find someone with a Facebook or Instagram post offering newborn photography sessions in Boise for a good price, that they are competent and worthy of your business. The time you spend reading reviews, looking over their work, and browsing through their website could potentially save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars depending on your photo shoot goals.

Do – Be Mindful of the Appointment Time

Even though most newborns sleep off and on throughout the day, do your best to schedule your session during the “sleepy” times if possible. Newborns are notoriously difficult to pose if they are wide awake. If your newborn photographer can work with a drowsy or sleepy baby, the session will go much more smoothly. Our experience has shown the best time typically is in the mornings after a long feed.

Don’t – Pick a Time Based on Your Schedule if Possible

Again, while it is understandable that you likely have other responsibilities and may have limited scheduling opportunities, it is important to keep your baby’s schedule as the primary driver of the appointment time whenever possible. Night time or evening sessions almost never go well. Remember, you are paying for this experience and to capture these memories. It is a good idea for both parents to take time off work if necessary to schedule an appropriate time.

Do – Be Aware of Safe Poses

There are many, many cute poses that warm your heart when you see them but are dangerous to your newborn. Be aware of the dangerous baby poses before you book your appointment. There are safe ways to capture these images, but they are likely edited photos from multiple positions. If your photographer suggests otherwise, you should not continue the session.

Don’t – Be Afraid to End a Session Early

The safety of your newborn is your number 1 responsibility. It should also be the number 1 responsibility of your newborn photographer. If they are willing to risk your child’s safety to get “the perfect shot” then you can no longer trust them.

Hire an Experienced, Trusted Newborn Photographer

As with hiring any professional, you should always find someone that is experienced in the service you need them to perform. This is especially true with newborn photographers. Hiring a local Boise newborn photographer that has been in the industry for years will give you that peace of mind knowing that they have safely worked with hundreds of newborns. It is also a good idea to check for professional awards and certifications. The bottom line is simple, your baby depends on you for their safety. Do not assume someone is prepared and qualified to work with your child. Take the time and do your research.
