I'm a mom, just like you. I've blinked and my 3 boys have jumped from babies to kids and I wholeheartedly agree believe that creating & capturing special memories together matters more than anything.

hi, i'm paige!

Finding out you’re expecting twins changes everything—including when and how to plan your twin maternity photo shoot. After years of photographing twin pregnancies here in Boise (and a few surprise twin discoveries that I’ll tell you about later!), I’ve learned that these sessions need completely different planning than singleton pregnancies.

Why Twin Maternity Photo Shoot Deserves Special Planning

Twin pregnancies are uniquely beautiful, but let’s be honest—they’re also kind of intense. Unlike singleton pregnancies, twin mamas show earlier, grow faster, and often have those babies weeks before anyone expects them to. This means your perfect maternity photo window is smaller and needs way more strategic planning than you might think.

The emotional journey of a twin pregnancy also deserves special documentation. Many twin moms tell me they feel a mix of excitement and overwhelm that’s different from their previous pregnancies- or for some first time moms, they know that after twins they aren’t planning to be pregnant again. Documenting this wild, wonderful time—when you’re anticipating two babies instead of one—gives you photos you’ll treasure forever of this crazy beautiful time in your life.

Optimal Timing for Your Twin Maternity Photo Shoot

The Sweet Spot: 28-30 Weeks

Okay, let’s get real about timing. For twin pregnancies, its best to book that maternity session between 28-30 weeks. I know it sounds early compared to singleton pregnancies where we wait until 34-36 weeks, but here’s the thing—twins have their own agenda.

I’ve learned this the hard way through experience. Many twins decide to make their grand entrance around 32-34 weeks, which means if you wait until the “traditional” maternity timing, you might miss your window entirely. And trust me, trying to squeeze in a last-minute maternity shoot when you’re already in early labor? Not happening.

Why 28-30 Weeks is Perfect:

  • You still feel human (relatively speaking!)
  • Your bump is gorgeous and round, but not so huge that every pose feels like a challenge
  • You’re not dealing with the intense third-trimester exhaustion that hits twin moms like a freight train
  • We have wiggle room if babies decide to come early

According to Johns Hopkins, twins are typically delivered between 32-38 weeks, with most twin pregnancies arriving around 36 weeks rather than the full 40-week term. In fact, more than half of all twin pregnancies end in preterm delivery (before 37 weeks), which is exactly why that 28-30 week timing window for your maternity photos is so crucial.

Surprise! It’s Twins.

Can we talk about something absolutely wild? I’ve photographed not one, but TWO families who didn’t know they were having twins until 38 weeks pregnant. 38 WEEKS! Can you even imagine?

The first mom came in for what she thought was a routine check-up and instead received the news that there were two babies in there AND she was about to have them. Like, immediately. I’m talking full-term, ready-to-go twins that had been playing hide-and-seek behind each other for nine months.

The second family? Same scenario, same year even! That mom said she had had multiple dreams that there were 2 babies in there but the doctor kept assuring her there was only one. whoops.

Life comes at you fast when you’re expecting multiples, and the traditional “we’ll do photos closer to the due date” approach just doesn’t work.

Studio vs. Outdoor Twin Maternity Photo Shoots

Studio Sessions: Maximum Comfort

Our Boise studio is specifically designed with expecting moms in mind, and this is especially important for twin pregnancies:

  • Climate Control: No weather worries or temperature fluctuations
  • Immediate Comfort: Easy access to restrooms, water, and comfortable seating
  • Flexible Posing: Our furniture and props support various comfort levels
  • Privacy: Perfect for more intimate or revealing maternity looks

For twin moms dealing with increased back pain or mobility issues, studio sessions often provide the most comfortable experience.

Outdoor Sessions: Natural Beauty

When twin moms are feeling great and want that natural, golden-hour glow, outdoor sessions can be magical:

  • Best Timing: Early morning or evening when temperatures are cooler and we get that soft golden light
  • Location Selection: We choose easily accessible spots with minimal walking
  • Backup Plans: Always have indoor alternatives ready
  • Comfort Items: Bring comfy walking shoes, water, and snacks

Posing Considerations for Twin Maternity Photo Shoots

Emphasizing the Twin Bump

Twin bellies are beautifully unique, and we adjust our posing to celebrate rather than hide their distinctive shape:

Side Profile Shots: Show off that gorgeous twin bump from the side, often our most dramatic angle

Hand Placement: Use gentle hand positioning to create heart shapes or emphasize the bump’s size

Partner Poses: Include partners with hands spanning the width of the belly to show scale

Comfort-First Posing

For twin maternity sessions, we prioritize poses that:

  • Support your back and legs
  • Allow for frequent position changes
  • Accommodate any physical limitations
  • Feel natural and unforced

What to Expect During Your Twin Maternity Session

Session Length and Pacing (AKA We’re Going with Your Flow)

Here’s the deal—twin maternity sessions are all about flexibility. I’ve had moms who felt amazing and wanted to do the full hour with multiple outfit changes, and I’ve had others who needed to wrap up after 30 minutes because their back was done for the day. Both are totally normal!

What I always plan for:

  • Slower Pacing: We’re not rushing through poses like we’re racing the clock
  • Realistic Expectations: If you only feel good enough for one outfit, we’re making that one outfit look incredible
  • Bathroom Breaks: Let’s be honest, twin moms and tiny bladders are a thing

The Reality Check

I’m going to be straight with you—some days you’re going to feel like a goddess carrying two babies, and other days you’re going to feel like you got hit by a truck. We work with whatever version of you shows up, and I promise you’ll still get gorgeous photos either way.

Here’s the thing though—this is where trusting us as your professional photographers really pays off. We’re experts at finding your most flattering angles (yes, even when you feel like a house), we’ll guide you toward clothing choices that make you look amazing, and let’s be honest—we’re really, really good at Photoshop for anything we can’t handle with lighting and posing alone.

Want to take the pampering up a notch? We offer professional hair and makeup services that come right to your home before your session. Nothing makes you feel more ready for photos than having someone else make you look fabulous while you sit back and relax. It’s the ultimate twin mama luxury, and trust me, you deserve it.

Special Considerations for Your Twin Maternity Photo Shoot

Hydration Breaks: We keep water handy and take frequent breaks

Comfortable Seating: Props and furniture to rest between poses

Temperature Control: Especially important as twin moms often run warmer

Emergency Planning: Always aware of nearest medical facilities -just in case those babes decide they love the studio and want to join the party! (For the record I’ve never had that happen)

Creating Your Complete Twin Journey: Maternity to Newborn

The Belly to Baby Experience

Here’s something I absolutely love about working with twin families—when you book both your maternity AND newborn sessions with the same photographer, we get to plan your entire story together. I’m talking about creating a cohesive visual journey from belly to babies that flows beautifully whether you’re planning wall galleries or albums.

During your maternity session, we’ll already start talking about your newborn session. What style elements do you love? What colors feel right for your nursery? How do you envision displaying these photos in your home? This advance planning means your maternity and newborn photos work together as a collection, not as separate random shoots.

Twin Albums: Double the Love, Double the Memories

One of my favorite things to create for twin families are individual albums for each baby. These aren’t identical books—each album features that specific baby as the star while still including beautiful shots with their twin.

Think about it: someday when your twins are older, each child gets their own special book that celebrates them individually while honoring their unique twin bond. We include photos of them together, but also those precious individual shots that capture each baby’s personality from day one.

The maternity photos become the perfect opening to these albums—showing mom carrying both babies, then transitioning into their separate birth stories and individual newborn portraits. It creates this incredible narrative that starts with anticipation and ends with two distinct little people who shared their very first home.

Making the Most of Your Twin Maternity Experience

Include Your Support System

Consider including the people (and pets!) who are part of this twin journey:

  • Partners: Capturing their excitement (and maybe slight terror?) about twins
  • Siblings: If you have other children, those belly shots with big brothers or sisters are pure magic
  • Fur Babies: Your dogs or cats who are about to become big siblings too—they deserve to be part of the story
  • Extended Family: Grandparents-to-be are often extra excited about twins, and their joy is infectious

Plan for Prints

Twin maternity photos deserve special treatment:

  • Wall Art: Large prints showcase the beauty of your twin bump
  • Birth Announcements: Professional photos make stunning twin announcements
  • Keepsake Albums: Document this unique pregnancy journey
