Last week I discovered what might be my new favorite spot for sunflower family photos that Boise, Idaho has to offer. I’d driven past Harrison Hollow on Bogus Basin Road countless times and even done a later fall session there a time or two, but it wasn’t until a client specifically requested a sunflower session that I really explored what this location had to offer. What I found was a photographer’s dream – and the perfect backdrop for a magical early September session.
The family I photographed was a crew of five: two older boys, one daughter, and their parents. We scheduled their mini session during magic hour in early September 2025, specifically to capitalize on the tail end of sunflower season before these golden beauties disappeared for the year. It works very well to stack mini sessions where the first one or two families can be in the open shade and the last session can be out in the open as the light fades.
Proximity to Town
Harrison Hollow Trail is incredibly convenient, located right at the bottom of Bogus Basin Road – only about 10 minutes from downtown Boise and maybe 20 minutes from Meridian. You’re not driving “out of town” at all, but rather staying close while still getting that beautiful foothill backdrop and seasonal sunflower element.
This proximity was perfect for our family of five, who actually lives just around the corner in the foothills above Hyde Park. With three kids ranging in age, the parents loved that they could practically walk to their session location. Everyone arrived relaxed and ready, without any travel stress or long car rides to manage.
Sweeping Foothill Views
Once you move past the sunflower areas, you get these amazing views of the Boise foothills that just scream Idaho in the best way. The rolling hills make for such a gorgeous backdrop, and I love how the muted browns and sages work with pretty much anything families choose to wear. It’s that classic Idaho look without feeling overdone or trying too hard.
During our September session, the foothills were that perfect golden-brown color that Idaho is famous for. Combined with the late-day light, it created a warm, dreamy atmosphere that made every shot feel cinematic.

I keep what I call my “foothills blanket” – a light tan colored throw that’s already seen its fair share of grass stains and embedded seeds. This thing is my secret weapon for family sessions in the foothills. I either have families sit directly on this protective blanket, or I put it down first and then layer their prettier blanket on top so theirs stays pristine.
Invest in a dedicated “location blanket” that matches the natural tones of the foothills. Light tan, sage green, or cream colored blankets blend in beautifully and give your clients a clean place to sit on the ground. - Sessions requiring extensive posing setups (the terrain is more limited)
- Anyone bothered by fellow hikers and their dogs

Last week’s Harrison Hollow session reminded me why I love seasonal photography so much.
