The perfect maternity photo can be taken around the 8th or 9th month of pregnancy, as long as you are not too far along to be very uncomfortable. This can be done in any season. But there are some considerations to take in that are unique to photography in the winter time. Late pregnancy brings its own set of complications along with it and when you add the aspects of a photography shoot that may last a few hours, things can get tricky. This article goes over 3 things to consider when taking maternity photos in the winter time.
Photoshoot Location
This is something you think about with any photo session but in the winter it is especially important since there’s ice and snow outside and extreme cold. Still outside photos during the winter time can be gorgeous especially when it’s a maternity photo. Frozen beaches, iced over meadows, and luxurious white blanketed lanes can make for some beautiful photographs that you can cherish for the rest of your life. There are near endless options when you choose an outside maternity shoot. Depending on where you live you might find a variety of terrain to shoot in. Locations that speak to you or that you have already made memories at can be especially fun to work with. Plus there is just something about being out in nature that speaks directly to pregnancy and relates to it very well. But, depending on the weather and the stage of your pregnancy, you may have to find an indoor location.
Safety
The second thing you need to think about when you are doing your winter time maternity photo session is safety. This is especially true if you’re doing an outside shoot. If you are doing an outside shoot make sure to wear shoes that have some grip on them. You also need to dress warmly so that you don’t get too cold. A photo session can last a couple hours and you need to make sure the cold is not going to be an issue for you. Also remember the dehydration in the winter time is possible and because we don’t think about it very much it can be a dangerous thing. Make sure to bring water with you so that you can drink periodically. It is also important to eat before your maternity shoot and you may want to bring snacks with you.
Clothing
Last, you need to think about what to wear. Wear something beautiful and flowing something you are comfortable in that is warm enough and that you can easily slip a coat over. You should be able to move freely in your outfit. It should go well with your personality and to the overall desired feeling of the finished product. Bright colors as well as neutrals will work especially in the winter time. Your shoes should match even though you may not be able to see them. Just remember that they should be safe to wear outside. Since this photograph is once in a lifetime, it may be worth it to spend a bit of money to find the perfect outfit.
