There’s no question that young kids can be unpredictable, and not all of them love being in front of a camera. But don’t stress! We have tons of experience with this age group and we’re here to set you up for a great experience with these 4 tips for a successful family photoshoot with toddlers.
1. Rest
Take your child’s nap and bedtime schedule into account when you schedule your session. Many photographers will tell you that the light is best right before sunset…but sunset is past bedtime for many toddlers, and great light won’t do you much good if your kid has a meltdown because they’re exhausted. Find a time when your kiddo is well rested. Everyone will be much happier!
2. Food
No one feels like smiling for pictures on an empty stomach, so one of the best things you can do for a successful photoshoot with toddlers is to feed them beforehand. And bring snacks! Non-messy, portable foods like Cheerios, pretzels, and fruit snacks can keep toddlers happy or provide a break if they need it.
3. Warmth
The key to a great outfit for young kids? Options. This is especially important during spring and fall, when who knows what the weather is going to do. Choose outfits that provide lots of layers you can take on and off so your kids stay comfortable throughout the photoshoot.

Your kids need your love and understanding even when they don’t want to smile for the camera. Please don’t stress about not getting great pictures because your kids aren’t being angels.
