I'm a mom, just like you. I've blinked and my 3 boys have jumped from babies to kids and I wholeheartedly believe that creating & capturing special memories together matters more than anything.

hi, i'm paige!

If you’re searching for baby milestone photography in Boise, there’s a good chance one of two things just happened: either you did a newborn session and loved it and now you’re wondering what comes next, or you completely missed the newborn window because you were in a fourth-trimester haze and you’ve just realized your baby looks absolutely nothing like they did at two weeks old and you have no professional photos to show for it.

Both of those are completely valid reasons to be here. And either way — whether you’re building on a newborn session or starting fresh — milestone photography is one of those things that, like the newborn stage itself, you can’t go back and recreate.

I’m Paige, the owner and lead photographer for Glean and Co Photography in Boise, Idaho and I have three boys. I photographed all of them professionally and I still look back and think ‘I wish I had more of that stage.’ The first year of a baby’s life moves faster than any other season- wildly fast in fact. Let me help you figure out how to actually capture it.

What Are Baby Milestone Sessions, Exactly?

Milestone sessions (sometimes called a “sitter session”) are short, focused portrait sessions that capture your baby at specific developmental stages — typically when they hit a new physical milestone like rolling over, sitting independently, or pulling to stand. They’re not mini newborn sessions, and they’re not family sessions. They’re something different, with their own special energy.

A wide-awake, rolly-polly, gummy smiled baby is the star of a milestone session. We’re not trying to get them to sleep; we want them exactly as they are. At Glean & Co, milestone sessions run about 20 minutes and include same-day image viewing, so you’re in and out in under two hours with photos in hand. Timed right they fit perfectly between your baby’s nap schedule so they arrive happy and ready to smile and you both leave content and ready for a nap.

When Should You Book a Baby Milestone Session in Boise?

This is the question most parents get wrong — not because they’re not paying attention, but because most photographers give them the wrong answer.

The 3-6-9-12 Schedule: Why Most Photographers Recommend It (And Why I Don’t)

The 3-6-9-12 schedule — sessions at three months, six months, nine months, and twelve months — is what most photographers recommend because it gets you in the studio at nice, even quarterly intervals. And look, I’m not going to pretend there’s no business logic there.

But here’s my honest take: it’s not actually the best schedule for your baby. Three-month-olds are notoriously difficult to photograph. They’re too big for most newborn poses and props, but they can’t sit up on their own, and tummy time is still genuinely hard for a lot of them. You end up with a lot of images that feel a little… in between. Not quite newborn, not quite anything yet.

My recommendation is to loosely book around your baby’s actual developmental milestones rather than the calendar. These happen at different ages for different babies, and that’s okay — you follow your baby’s lead.

The Tummy Time & First Smiles Window: 4–6 Months

This is one of my favorite baby milestone session windows. Around 4–6 months, most babies have found their feet (and are very interested in them), are starting to push up during tummy time, and are full of big gummy grins. They’re interactive, expressive, and still beautifully round and rolly. This is a window worth capturing.

If you missed your newborn session and you’re in this window right now — this is a great place to start. These images have a completely different feeling than newborn photos, and that’s exactly as it should be.

This little guy came to us for our Annual Chunky Baby contest at just barely 4 months old. A great age to get smiles, toe grabs, tummy time and some shots propped up in baby safe props.

The Sitting Baby Window: 7–9 Months

The 7–9 month window is what I think of as the chunky baby prime. Babies are usually sitting independently, which means we can photograph them in setups that weren’t possible before. They’re still pre-stranger-danger for most, which means they’re usually relatively happy with a warm, friendly face behind a camera. They’re also reaching peak baby deliciousness — the thighs, the rolls, the belly laughs.

A lot of 10–11 month olds hit a stranger danger window where they’re more cautious and clingy, which can make sessions trickier. If your baby is around 7–8 months, don’t wait. This is a sweet spot.

The First Birthday Session: 12 Months

A first birthday session — which often includes a cake smash — is its own category, but it’s worth mentioning here because it’s a natural anchor point for the milestone journey. More on cake smash sessions in a separate post, but the short version is: yes, do it, and book it early enough that your images are back before the party.

Another big landmark for one year olds if you’d prefer to skip the cake is standing/pulling up and walking. During 1 year milestones we often use parents hands if they’re holding them to walk across the studio or offer a chair that they can pull up on to pose with.

Should You Skip the 3-Month Session?

Honestly? Unless you missed your newborn session and you’re trying to capture something from those early weeks, I’d skip the 3-month session. The 4–6 month window is more photogenic, and you’ll likely be happier with those images. Save your budget for the windows where your baby’s personality is really starting to show.

What to Expect with Baby Milestone Photography in Boise

Milestone sessions at Glean & Co are intentionally short — about 20 minutes of shooting time. Babies this age have a limited attention window, and working efficiently means we get better images than if we drag it out. You’ll want to time the session around a nap (so they arrive rested and happy), and with a full belly so they don’t get hangry. Bringing a few of their favorite snacks is always a great way to keep them engaged as well. We always stock teethers, yogurt drops and organic puffs in the studio just in case.

Outfit prep is simple: one or two cute outfits, easy to get on and off. We have an entire closet of adorable diaper covers, rompers, coveralls and of course headbands and hats – all included in your session fee.

Same-day viewing means you look at your images right after the session, choose what you want, and order before you leave. No waiting weeks to see your baby at the age they were two weeks ago.

DIY vs. Professional Baby Milestone Photos — The Honest Answer

DIY milestone photos can be genuinely beautiful and meaningful. A simple setup — a neutral blanket, good window light, a monthly number — takes about 10 minutes and creates a record you’ll treasure. I encourage you to do this AND book professional sessions, because they’re capturing different things.

What a professional adds: consistent quality across sessions (so your 4-month and 8-month photos feel like a cohesive set), expertise in coaxing expressions from a wiggly baby who has no interest in holding still, and the experience to know when to pivot when something isn’t working. And we use safety assistants and professional grade props to ensure your baby is always safe.

For fellow photographers: milestone sessions are an excellent way to keep your newborn clients engaged between their initial session and the cake smash. The communication system matters here — reach out to them proactively around the 4-month and 7-month marks and remind them these windows exist. Don’t wait for them to find you.

Questions to Ask a Baby Milestone Photographer in Boise

  • How long does a milestone session take?
  • Can I see examples of milestone sessions specifically — not just your newborn or family work?
  • What’s your approach when baby is fussy or not cooperating?
  • Do you offer same-day image viewing?
  • If I did my newborn session with you, will the style be consistent?
  • How do you communicate with clients between booking and session day?

Red Flags for Baby Milestone Photography in Boise

  • A photographer who primarily works with sleepy newborns and doesn’t have a strong portfolio of alert, active babies
  • Rigid scheduling that doesn’t account for when your individual baby actually hits their milestones
  • Long turnaround times — a 4-month-old looks dramatically different six weeks later
  • No proactive communication — you should never be the one chasing them down to confirm your session
  • No consistency with your previous newborn work if you’re continuing a series
