Finding the right maternity photographer in Boise is one of those things that sounds simple until you’re actually doing it — suddenly you’re 30 weeks pregnant, scrolling through Instagram at midnight, and wondering why everyone’s portfolio looks completely different and how you’re supposed to know which one is right for you.
I’m Paige, and I’ve been both the photographer and the client. My first maternity session was me, a tripod, and a self-timer in our front yard. I’m not going to tell you it was bad — But there are exactly zero images of me in them that I would ever hang on my wall. What I would give to go back and book a professional to capture the one any only time I was pregnant with my first baby.
Whether you end up booking with us or with another photographer here in the Treasure Valley, I want to help you figure out what actually matters — and what’s just noise — when you’re making this decision.

Let’s Clear Up a Few Maternity Photography Myths First
Myth: You Only Need Maternity Photos OR Newborn Photos, Not Both
This is a big one. A lot of moms talk themselves out of maternity photos because they’re planning to do a newborn session anyway, or they skip the newborn session because they’re planning to do maternity. Here’s the thing: these are two completely different seasons of your life, and you truly can’t go back and recreate either one of them.
The maternity argument I hear most often is ‘I can take my own newborn photos.’ And okay — maybe you can get some sweet snapshots at home. But can you photograph yourself holding your brand new baby? Can you trust that your partner will take plenty of photos of you with your new baby? I sure couldn’t. Those are moments that require someone whose only job is to capture this moment in time.
And the newborn-only moms? Your baby is going to want to see what you looked like pregnant with them someday. That bump is part of their story too. Don’t skip it because you’re feeling self-conscious or running out of budget — this is one of those things you genuinely cannot go back and do later.
If you’re planning to do both, it’s worth thinking about doing them with the same photographer. More on that in a minute.
Myth: Any Maternity Photographer in Boise Can Do Any Style
Here’s something photographers don’t always say out loud: not every photographer does every type of session equally well. If you want beautiful, well-lit studio maternity portraits, you should hire a photographer who works primarily in a studio. If you want golden hour outdoor photos along the Boise foothills or along the greenbelt, you should hire a photographer who does that type of work regularly.
The myth is that any good photographer can just… do it all. And while technically they might be capable, there’s a real difference between someone who occasionally wanders outside with their studio clients and someone whose entire body of work is in natural light. The same goes in reverse — someone who exclusively shoots outdoors probably hasn’t spent enough time in a controlled studio environment to produce the same quality work there.
Look at the actual portfolio. Does the majority of their maternity work look like what you want yours to look like? If the answer is no, keep looking — even if they came highly recommended by your best friend.
Myth: You Should Book a Maternity Photographer in Boise and a Newborn Photographer Separately
If you’re planning both sessions (which I hope you are), there’s a real advantage to booking a photographer who specializes in both — or a studio that offers a Belly to Baby package. You get visual consistency between the two sets of images, which matters a lot when you’re eventually making wall art or an album. You also only have to go through the ‘getting to know you’ process once, which is genuinely valuable when you’re tired and postpartum for the newborn session.
The other thing to consider: a photographer who does newborn sessions regularly understands what the postpartum experience actually feels like. They know you might need more time the morning of, that hair and makeup matters more than you think when you’re exhausted and running on three hours of sleep, and that you’re going to need to feel cared for during that session — not just photographed. When they’ve already gotten to know you during the maternity photos, you’ll feel so much more comfortable being photographed by them just days or weeks after having a baby.

What Actually Matters When You’re Choosing a Maternity Photographer in Boise
Specialization in Maternity Photography — Not Just ‘Also Does Maternity’
Photographers who regularly shoot maternity sessions know how to flatter a pregnant body — through posing, lighting, and wardrobe choices. This isn’t the same as a wedding photographer who occasionally books a maternity client or a general family photographer who squeezes in a few belly sessions each year. You want someone who has done this enough times that they have a system, strong portfolio, and real confidence with posing pregnant bodies.
When you look at their work, ask yourself: does every maternity client look beautiful? Or do some of them look awkward and uncomfortable? An experienced maternity photographer knows how to find your best angles before you even have to ask.
Style Match: Posed Studio vs. Outdoor Lifestyle vs. Something In Between
This is where your Pinterest board comes in and there’s no wrong answer here — it’s entirely about what resonates with you. Studio maternity work tends to be elegant and timeless: soft light, beautiful fabrics, a focus on the belly and connection between you and your partner. Outdoor maternity photography in Boise tends to feel more natural and location-specific: golden light, movement, Treasure Valley landscapes as a backdrop.
Some studios (including ours) offer both in a single session, which gives you variety without having to choose. But the most important thing is to look at a photographer’s portfolio and ask yourself honestly: does this look like ME? Would I display this in my house? If the answer is no — for whatever reason — that photographer might not be the right fit.
The Wardrobe Factor — Does Your Maternity Photographer in Boise Have a Client Closet?
One of the most stressful parts of maternity sessions is finding something to wear at 32 weeks. Maternity clothes are designed to be functional, not photogenic, and most of us don’t have a wardrobe full of gorgeous belly-friendly gowns in perfect photography colors.
A photographer who has a client closet is genuinely offering you something valuable: the ability to show up without figuring out what to wear. Look for a range of sizes (pregnancy bodies vary enormously), a variety of styles, and options for your partner and any older kids who might be joining.
If the photographer you’re considering doesn’t have a client closet, factor in the time and money to source your own options before you compare prices.
Communication and Guidance: Your Photographer Should Come to You
This is something I feel strongly about: you should not be sending your maternity photographer a nervous email a week before your session asking ‘are we still on?’ A good photographer reaches out to you — proactively, with helpful information, at the right times throughout the process.
You’re growing a human being. You have enough on your plate. The communication system should be their job, not yours. Look for someone who sends you styling guides, checks in as your due date approaches, and answers your questions before you even know to ask them. If it’s hard to get a response before you even book, that’s a very reliable preview of what the entire experience will be like.
Photographers run the gambit in terms of professionalism and you want to hire someone who can tell you exactly how long their turnaround time is, what time your session should be at for the best light and which dress is going to be most flattering. Choosing someone who is reliable and has a truly established business means they’re going to show up on time, communicate well and deliver as promised.
When Should You Actually Book Your Maternity Session?
Book your photographer as early as possible — ideally in your second trimester — to lock in availability. The actual session is best scheduled between 30 and 36 weeks, when your belly is full and round but you’re still relatively comfortable. By 36+ weeks, many women are exhausted and physically uncomfortable, and it shows in photos.
That said, if you’re 35 weeks reading this and you haven’t booked yet — don’t panic. Late maternity sessions are beautiful and very doable- I’ve photographed many women now who have had their babies the very next day! Just move quickly, because your baby has their own timeline.
One more thing: fall is the busiest season for photographers in Boise (September through December), so if you’re due in that window, book earlier than you think you need to. Here at Glean & Co we typically have a fully booked out fall by the end of July – but again, if you’re on the last minute train, it’s always worth asking about last minute availability.
Questions to Ask a Maternity Photographer in Boise Before You Book
- How would you describe your maternity photography style, and can I see a full recent session?
- Do you offer studio, outdoor, or both — and which do you feel strongest in?
- Do you have a client wardrobe or styling help?
- What time of day do you prefer for maternity sessions, and do you have set session times?
- What does your communication process look like between booking and session day?
- Do you also shoot newborns, and do you offer a package for both?
- What happens if I go into labor before my session date?
Red Flags That Mean Keep Looking
- Their maternity portfolio style looks completely different from what you want for yourself — don’t try to make someone fit your vision; find someone who already does it
- No client wardrobe and no styling guidance
- You’re expected to initiate all communication — they’re not proactively reaching out to you
- They’ll shoot at any time, any day, without any recommendation about what works best — experienced photographers have opinions about this
- No clear process for what happens if your baby arrives early
- Difficulty getting responses before you’ve even booked
- Can’t confidently (and immediately) answer all of the questions listed above.
