Booking cake smash photography in Boise is one of those things that sounds straightforward — you put a cake in front of a one-year-old, you take photos, done — and then you start researching and realize there are about a thousand ways to do this and approximately zero consensus on what the right way is.
I’m Paige, and I’ve photographed enough first birthdays to tell you that they’re genuinely one of my favorite sessions on the menu. Not because they’re the most technically challenging (they’re not) but because nothing in this job is more purely joyful than watching a baby discover cake for the first time. Also, I have three sons whose cake smash sessions are seared into my memory as personality previews — my oldest daintily picked the berries off the top of his cake one at a time. My youngest put his entire face directly into the cake within the first 30 seconds. My oldest is now organized, careful, and responsible. My youngest is a wrecking ball of chaos and maniacal laughter. They were exactly who they are in those photos.
Here’s what you actually need to know before you book.
What Cake Smash Photography in Boise Actually Is
A well-executed cake smash session is not just ‘stick baby in front of cake and photograph the mess.’ It’s a full portrait session that typically includes three distinct parts: clean portraits before the cake (when your baby is dressed, styled, and at their most cooperative), the cake smash itself, and a splash or bath portion where baby gets cleaned up — which produces some of the sweetest photos of the whole session.
At Glean & Co, a full cake smash session runs 60–90 minutes and includes all three components. You’ll want to plan accordingly and understand the timing of each piece.

Busting the Cake Smash Photography in Boise Myths
Myth: If Your Baby Cries, the Session Is Ruined
Some babies dive into the cake with both fists and pure, feral joy. Some babies stare at it suspiciously for five full minutes before poking it with one finger. Some babies look at you like you’ve personally offended them and refuse to go near it. All of these make beautiful photos.
In my experience, how a baby responds to their cake smash is one of the earliest previews you get of their personality — and those are the photos parents end up treasuring most. Not the perfectly smiley ones. The real ones.
Myth: You Have to Do a Cake Smash on Their Birthday
Nope. You don’t have to do a cake smash at all. If you want spaghetti smash photos, we can do that. A taco smash, a watermelon smash, a pile of fresh fruit. Or you can skip the smash entirely and do clean, styled first birthday portraits that focus purely on your baby looking gorgeous. There are no rules here.
What does matter however is the timing of the shoot. When and what do you want these photos for? More on that below…
Myth: Any Photographer Can Execute the Style You Want
There are really significant differences in cake smash photography styles, and this is worth paying attention to. At Glean & Co, our aesthetic for cake smash sessions is intentionally simple: your baby, a cake, a cake stand, maybe a few flowers. Clean backgrounds, beautiful light, the focus entirely on your baby.
We don’t do elaborate balloon arches, Minnie Mouse themes, or big prop-heavy setups. There is absolutely nothing wrong with those — they’re beautiful and a lot of families love them! They’re just not what we do. If you want a themed setup with matching balloons, garlands, and custom props, you should hire a photographer who specializes in exactly that and can help you source and style it. Don’t try to make a simple-aesthetic photographer execute a maximalist vision, and don’t assume a styled-production photographer will simplify for you. Find someone whose natural style is already what you want.

What to Actually Look For in Cake Smash Photography in Boise
Real Experience with One-Year-Olds
One-year-olds are a unique and wonderful challenge. They’re mobile, opinionated, deeply uninterested in instructions, and frequently in a stranger-danger phase. A photographer who doesn’t regularly work with this age group will struggle in ways that show up in the final images.
Ask specifically to see their cake smash portfolio — not just their general baby work. A strong cake smash photographer has figured out how to coax real expressions from babies who have never seen a camera before and have better things to do than look at it. And most importantly they’ll be prepared for anything.
The very first time I photographed a cake smash it was an outdoor session. We let the baby go to town on a chocolate cake, got some adorable pictures and then the mom asked what was next. I looked at her like “how should I know?” ….because I had no idea. I hadn’t told her to bring wipes or a change of clothes for the baby or for her. I hadn’t bought a trash bag to clean up the cake. The mom literally put her baby’s bottom half into a plastic target bag she had in her purse so that she could hold him without getting covered in cake walking to the car. The second time I did one the mom had the baby barefoot and she got a goathead stuck in her foot and then cried the rest of the session. All these years later after hundreds of cake smashes I can tell you exactly what to pack, what I have in my bag of essentials and how to prevent things like the goathead incident.
Studio Setup, Cleanup, and the Splash Component
Cake smash sessions require a dedicated space that’s designed for mess and easy to clean between clients. Ask about the studio setup: what’s included, who coordinates the cake, what the backdrop and styling looks like. And ask specifically about the splash or bath component — is it included? What does it involve? At Glean & Co it’s a standard part of every cake smash session, and it’s often where we get our very favorite images.
If they do outdoor sessions what do they bring with them and what are you- the client- responsible for bringing? At Glean & Co we don’t provide the cake itself due to allergy concerns. Something that we explain multiple times throughout our communication process, yet I had a client one time show up with no cake to her cake smash session. Whoops. We rescheduled and it was no big deal, but you definitely need to be aware of whats included- and what’s not with whoever you hire.
Timing: Don’t Leave This Until the Last Minute
This is something that catches a lot of families off guard: if you want your cake smash photos displayed or printed for your baby’s birthday party, you need to do the session far enough in advance that the images can be edited, ordered, and delivered before the party date.
Ask your photographer explicitly: what is your typical turnaround time for editing? How long does print production take? Work backward from your party date and give yourself a real buffer. Don’t assume they can rush your order. Many photographers can’t, and the ones who can usually charge for it. A good photographer will bring this up proactively — but if they don’t, ask.
If you want photos taken on their actual birthday you’ll want to start looking way in advance, particularly if their birthday falls on a Saturday or Sunday.
Communication: They Should Be Guiding You
Your photographer should be reaching out to you proactively as the session date approaches — not the other way around. They should be confirming details, asking about styling preferences, and helping you think through timing. If you’re a week out and haven’t heard from them, that’s a problem.

How to Prep Your Baby (and Yourself) for the Cake Smash Session
- Time the session around a nap — a rested baby is (usually) a happy baby
- Feed them before the session, but not to the brim — a little hunger makes the cake more interesting
- Bring multiple outfit options in case of an early mess during the portrait portion
- Plan your own outfit — you may end up in some of these photos, and you’ll be glad you thought about it. You’ll also want to bring your own change of clothes because even if you’re not in the photos babies often like to crawl up to their mother’s with sticky fingers
- Don’t stress if your baby is cautious about the cake — the photographer has seen every possible reaction and knows how to work with all of them
- Bring a favorite toy or snack for between shots if your baby needs a reset
DIY vs. Professional Cake Smash in Boise: The Real Talk
DIY cake smashes at home happen all the time and some of them are genuinely adorable. A phone camera, good natural light, and a grocery store smash cake will give you something to post and something to remember.
What a professional adds: controlled, consistent lighting, experience with baby’s expressions and peak-joy timing, a clean studio setup without your kitchen in the background, and editing that makes these images feel like artwork you’d want on your wall.
The splash photos in particular are very difficult to get right without professional lighting and not many home bathrooms have great natural light. The combination of water, movement, and a baby who is fully over the camera at this point requires real expertise.
For fellow photographers: cake smash sessions are a natural way to close out the first-year journey for your existing newborn and milestone clients. Build it into your communication workflow — reach out proactively at the 10-month mark and remind them this is coming. Don’t wait for them to find you.
Questions to Ask a Cake Smash Photographer in Boise
- Can I see dedicated cake smash session examples, not just general baby portraits?
- Is the splash or bath portion included in the session?
- What’s your aesthetic — do you do themed sessions, or is your style more minimal?
- Who coordinates the setup, cake, and props — you or me?
- What time of day do you prefer for cake smash sessions?
- What’s your editing turnaround time, and how far in advance should I book if I need photos for a birthday party?
- What happens if my baby refuses to engage with the cake at all?
Red Flags When Booking a Cake Smash Photographer in Boise
- No dedicated cake smash portfolio — general baby photos aren’t the same thing
- No clarity on what’s included in the setup, styling, or splash component
- A style mismatch — if you want an elaborate themed session and they do minimalist work (or vice versa), don’t try to make it work
- No proactive communication about timing, turnaround, and whether your images will be ready for your party
- Rigid about timing despite having a one-year-old whose mood is entirely dictated by the nap schedule
