hi, i'm paige!

If you’ve been thinking about booking spring maternity and newborn photos in Boise, the timing couldn’t be better — and not just because the flowers are pretty. There’s something about this particular window of the year that lines up almost perfectly for families navigating the end of pregnancy or the first weeks of a new baby’s life. The light is softer, the temperatures are actually comfortable for a newborn or a very pregnant human, and Boise genuinely shows off in a way it doesn’t in August.

Let me walk you through why spring keeps coming up as a favorite season in the studio — and what to think about if you’re trying to plan your own session.

Spring Maternity and Newborn Photos Light in Boise’s Blooming Foothills Are a Real Thing

You don’t have to take anyone’s word for it — just drive out to Military Reserve or through the Hulls Gulch foothills area in April or May and watch what’s happening. The hillsides turn green, wildflowers pop up in places you forgot existed, and the whole Treasure Valley feels like it remembered how to be beautiful.

For outdoor maternity and newborn photos specifically, this makes for gorgous outdoor photo backgrounds. Spring light in Boise is softer than summer light — the sun isn’t directly overhead and beating down, which means we can actually shoot at reasonable hours without everyone squinting or overheating. The foothills in bloom also just photograph beautifully. Soft greens and pops of color in the background give images a timeless, natural feel without relying on props or backdrops to do the heavy lifting.

For a newborn especially, temperature is everything. Babies cannot regulate their own body heat, which makes outdoor sessions trickier than people expect — summer is too hot, and spring can still throw a cold or rainy day at you without much warning. But on a warm spring day, it’s genuinely perfect. That’s why working with a photographer who has a studio backup plan matters so much. We’ve done sessions where we start inside the studio, then step out onto the studio grounds for a few outdoor floral shots when the weather cooperates — best of both worlds without the gamble of committing entirely to an outdoor location.

Maternity Photos: Why Spring Timing Works in Your Favor

The sweet spot for maternity photos is generally 30–36 weeks along. Your bump is full and beautiful, you’re still moving comfortably, and you haven’t hit the stage where everything is an effort and you’re just ready to meet this baby already. (No judgment — we’ve all been there.)

If you’re due in late spring or early summer, that puts your ideal maternity window right in the heart of Boise’s best outdoor season. Think about what the Boise foothills look like through the season: In early April they’re usually still pretty dry and brown — not exactly the backdrop you’re dreaming of. May to early June is usually the sweet spot, when the wildflowers are popping and the hills are genuinely green and alive. Come July and into August, the foothills are starting to dry again and that golden-brown look is back for the summer.

This year the foothills are actually greening up a little earlier than usual, which means we might see those spring pops of color sooner than expected — something worth keeping in mind if you’re trying to time an outdoor session around peak beauty.

For photographers reading this: spring maternity sessions are genuinely some of the most beautiful you’ll shoot all year if you’re leaning into outdoor locations. Golden hour hits earlier in the evening than it does in summer, which makes scheduling easier for families with other kids in tow.

Newborn Photos in Spring: What to Know About Timing

Newborn sessions are ideally scheduled within the first three weeks of life — closer to the first two if you want the sleepiest, most curl-up-able baby possible. After that, babies get more alert and opinionated, which is adorable but does change the session dynamic.

The good news about spring newborns is that outdoor newborn photos actually become a real option. In our studio, we can control temperature and environment completely, so a January or August newborn session is no problem. But there’s something especially lovely about stepping outside with a sleeping baby wrapped in something soft and photographing them against spring blooms or soft green foliage. It’s not something we get to do comfortably year-round in Idaho so if you have a baby born during that late spring window its definitely something to consider!

If the weather cooperates — and Boise spring weather is famously unpredictable, so we always have a plan B — the outdoor component of a spring newborn session can be genuinely stunning.

A note for DIYers: If you’re thinking about doing your own outdoor newborn photos this spring, please don’t skip the temperature check. What feels comfortable to you can be cold for a baby very quickly, especially if there’s any breeze. Keep sessions short, have a warm place nearby, and never prop a baby outdoors without someone actively spotting them. When in doubt, keep it simple — wraps and parent arms are safer than props on uneven ground.

Studio vs. Outdoor for Your Spring Maternity and Newborn Photos: You Don’t Have to Choose

One of the things families appreciate about booking at Glean & Co is that we’re not locked into one approach. The studio at 670 E. Pennsylvania is a fully equipped lifestyle space — warm, calm, comfortable for a newborn — and we also shoot outdoors regularly when the session calls for it.

Spring is actually one of the best times to combine both. Start indoors with classic studio images, then step outside for a few minutes while the baby is content and the light is good. You get the range without committing entirely to one environment.

For families who are newer to professional photography: this flexibility is worth asking about when you’re vetting photographers. Not everyone offers both, and having the option matters more than you might think when you’re working around a baby’s schedule.

If You’re Thinking About Booking Spring Maternity and Newborn Photos, Don’t Wait Too Long

Spring fills up faster than people expect, especially for newborn sessions where timing is set by the baby rather than a calendar. We book tentatively around your due date, which means reaching out while you’re still early in your second trimester is genuinely not too early — it just protects your spot.

Maternity sessions book out a few months in advance as well, particularly for the outdoor golden hour slots that fill up first.

If spring maternity and newborn photos in Boise are on your radar, the best move is to get in touch now, even if your due date feels like it’s still a ways off. The Treasure Valley in bloom is a short window. It’s worth planning around it.
