I'm a mom, just like you. I've blinked and my 3 boys have jumped from babies to kids and I wholeheartedly believe that creating & capturing special memories together matters more than anything.

hi, i'm paige!

If you’ve been researching how long do newborn sessions take, you’ve probably noticed a pattern. Almost every photographer recommends planning for three or four hours.

Here’s my unpopular opinion: I don’t think most newborn sessions need to be that long.

Now before other photographers come after me, let me explain.I ‘m not suggesting we rush babies through a session. Newborns should always set the pace. If they need to eat, we stop. If they need to be soothed, we soothe them. If they need a diaper change or a cuddle with mom, that’s exactly what we do.

The challenge isn’t that babies need breaks. That’s simply life in the fourth trimester. The challenge is that many photographers spend hours trying to convince a baby to do something they don’t want to do. And I don’t think that’s serving anyone.

So, How Long Do Newborn Sessions Take?

At Glean & Co., our Family Newborn Sessions typically last about 90 minutes, while our Luxury Newborn Experience includes approximately 2½ hours of photography.

Could a session occasionally run a little longer? Absolutely. Babies don’t read schedules.

But after photographing newborns for more than 15 years, I’ve found that 90 minutes to 2½ hours is almost always enough time to create a beautiful, varied gallery without asking exhausted new parents to spend 5 hours of their day in a hot photography studio.

The Fourth Trimester Challenge Isn’t the Baby

This may sound strange coming from a newborn photographer, but I don’t think babies are the reason sessions take three or four hours. Photographers are.

We fall in love with an idea. We picture a pose we want to create. We imagine the tiny fingers laying just right. We spend twenty minutes trying to get one hand to rest perfectly on a cheek. We wait for every finger to uncurl, every toe to line up, every tiny detail to look exactly as we envisioned.

I understand why. We care deeply about creating beautiful artwor. But somewhere along the way, it’s easy to lose sight of who we’re creating it for. Because here’s the truth- Parents don’t remember whether every finger was perfectly posed.

They remember how impossibly tiny their baby looked curled up on dad’s chest.

They remember the wispy hair on the top of their baby’s head.

The sleepy stretches.

The little smiles.

The way their baby fit perfectly into their hands.

Those are the details that matter.

I Let Babies Lead the Session

Every baby has a different personality, even at just a few weeks old. Some happily sleep through almost anything. Some want to be wrapped. Some want to stretch. Some would much rather be snuggled by mom than posed on a beanbag.

Instead of forcing every baby through the same checklist of poses, I let them tell me what kind of session we’re going to have.

If baby is peacefully sleeping, wonderful. We’ll create those sleepy newborn portraits. If baby starts fussing for more than five or ten minutes, I don’t keep trying to make the same pose happen.

We pivot.

Maybe baby would rather be wrapped. Still unhappy? Perfect. Let’s capture some beautiful images with mom while baby settles.

Wide awake? Great. Awake newborn portraits can be absolutely stunning. Rather than spending thirty minutes trying to convince a baby to do something they clearly don’t want to do, we create something else.

One of my favorite things about newborn photography is that there isn’t only one right answer.

Following Baby Usually Creates More Variety

Ironically, changing directions often gives us more variety, not less.

Instead of spending forty minutes chasing one pose, we can create wrapped portraits, family images, close-up details, sibling photographs, awake portraits, and those quiet connection moments parents end up loving most.

By the time baby is ready for something new, we’ve already built an incredible gallery.

The session keeps moving.

Parents stay relaxed.

Baby stays comfortable.

Everyone wins.

New Parents Are Tired Enough

One of the biggest reasons I feel so strongly about this is because I vivdly remember what those early weeks are like.

You’re healing. You’re sleeping in tiny stretches. And leaving the house with a newborn can feel like an accomplishment all by itself. The last thing I want is for parents to spend four hours wondering if their baby is ever going to settle into one specific pose, getting more and more anxious as time ticks by.

I want your session to feel calm.

I want you to enjoy watching your baby.

I want you to leave feeling like this was one of the easiest parts of your week, not one more exhausting thing you had to get through.

What If My Baby Cries?

Then we respond.

Babies cry because they’re communicating. They’re hungry. They’re tired. They’re overstimulated. They want to be held.

None of those things mean the session is failing.

They simply tell us what baby needs next.

The beautiful thing about newborn photography is that there are so many ways to create meaningful images.

A wrapped baby is beautiful. A sleepy baby is beautiful. An awake baby looking straight into the camera is beautiful.

A baby snuggled safely in mom’s arms is beautiful. The goal isn’t to force every baby into the same gallery.

The goal is to create the best gallery for your baby.

My Philosophy on Newborn Photography

When people ask me, “How long do newborn sessions take?”, my answer isn’t really about the clock. It’s about the experience.

I believe newborn photography should fit around your baby, not ask your baby to fit around the photography.

Your baby shouldn’t have to work for the photos. Your photographer should.

By following your baby’s cues instead of fighting them, we can create a gallery that’s full of genuine connection, beautiful variety, and authentic moments, all without asking exhausted parents to spend an entire day in the studio.

Because years from now, I don’t think you’ll remember whether every finger was perfectly posed.

I think you’ll remember how your baby looked.

How they felt in your arms.

And how, for just a little while, time seemed to stand still.
